Paestum was once called Poseidonia in honor of the God Poseidon, but then renamed with its current name from the Roman Empire following the colonization of 273 BC Paestum still today retains its impressive temples in an astonishing way, dedicated to the much revered Greek deities, such as the best preserved temple of Neptune then followed by the more ancient one of Hera and the last but not the least temple of Ceres. The park also boasts a national museum, where it preserves ancient and priceless finds from the Paleolithic.
