- Wilpattu National Park Hunuwilagama Gate - Explore Wilpattu National Park, situated on the island of Sri Lanka. This park is distinguished by its “Willus” (natural lakes) - sand-rimmed water basins or depressions that collect rainwater. It is located in the Northwest coast lowland dry zone of Sri Lanka, 30 km west of Anuradhapura and 26 km north of Puttalam (about 180 km north of Colombo). Covering an area of 1,317 square kilometers (131,693 hectares), the park’s elevation ranges from 0 to 152 meters above sea level. Wilpattu boasts nearly 106 lakes (Willu) and tanks scattered throughout its expanse. It is the largest and one of the oldest national parks in Sri Lanka, and is globally recognized for its leopard (Panthera pardus kotiya) population. A remote camera survey conducted by the Wilderness & Wildlife Conservation Trust from July to October 2015 captured images of forty-nine individual leopards in the surveyed area, revealing a core area density comparable to that of Yala National Park’s Block I and Horton Plains National Park.
