During the Joseon Dynasty, the royal guards were tasked with guarding the Gwanghwamun Gate, the entrance to Gyeongbokgung Palace where the king governed the nation. Since 1469, this ceremony has been held, and its reenactment began in 1996. It captivates onlookers as guardsmen, dressed in traditional costumes, perform the changing of the guards at the main gate of Gyeongbokgung Palace in downtown Seoul. This ceremony is conducted daily, except on Tuesdays when the palace is closed.
Constructed in 1395, Gyeongbokgung Palace is often called the “Northern Palace” due to its location being the furthest north compared to the neighboring palaces of Changdeokgung (Eastern Palace) and Gyeongheegung (Western Palace). Gyeongbokgung Palace is arguably the most beautiful and remains the largest of all five palaces, featuring stunning buildings such as Gyeonghoeru and Hyangwonjeong Pavilions, both situated on ponds.
After the walking tour of Gyeongbokgung Palace, the next stop is the hidden local market. Tongin Market, established in 1941, opened a unique food cafe in 2012. Initially set up for Japanese residents during colonization, it was reclaimed by Koreans after the war. The market boasts numerous grocery stores and food stands. Unlike other traditional markets, it offers a unique experience for visitors to exchange money for ancient yeopjeon (brass coins), the currency used during the Goryeo and Joseon dynasties. Fill your lunch tray with a variety of freshly prepared foods found throughout the market. Enjoy 5-10 types of snacks and drinks in the welcoming market atmosphere. Tongin Market is also a renowned filming location for popular local shows such as Infinite Challenge and Super Junior M’s Guest House.
