Explore ancient history by visiting Arachova, one of Greece’s most cultural cities, for a one-hour stop. Discover Delphi, the Temple of Apollo, the Delphi Museum, the “Navel of the Earth,” and the Delphi Oracle.
This private tour will transport you to the ancient era of Delphi’s glory. Delight in the wonders of Delphi, the museum, and its treasures. Athens Taxi Tour will collect you from your hotel or cruise ship, and the journey will begin through Viotia, passing Thebes, the once-mighty city-state that fell alongside Athens in the Battle of Chaeronea in the 4th century B.C., and Levadia.
Athens Taxi will drive you through Arachova, renowned for its vibrant, multi-colored carpets, to Delphi. Upon arrival in Delphi, the ancient sanctuary of Apollo, you’ll witness its grandeur firsthand. Visit the archaeological site, including the Temple of Apollo, the Athenian Treasury, the Theater, and the Stadium. Additionally, explore the Museum, which houses remarkable pieces from the Archaic and Classical periods.
Among the archaeological treasures are the unique bronze Charioteer, the pediments from the Temple of Apollo, the “Navel of the Earth,” and the winged Sphinx.
Enjoy lunch in the modern city of Delphi, a charming mountain village.
After lunch, the tour proceeds to Thermopylae (Hot Gates), approximately 90 km from Delphi, the historic site of the famous battle between the 300 Spartans led by Leonidas and the Persian army of Xerxes in 480 B.C. A monumental tribute to Leonidas and the 300 cypress trees honors the heroic Spartans. The monument bears the inscription “Molon Lave,” meaning “Come and get it,” a phrase Leonidas famously uttered to the Persian King Xerxes when asked to surrender his weapons. This phrase has become a global symbol of defiance. Shortly after the battle, an ancient memorial was placed across the highway from the modern one. It is a small carved stone plaque that reads, “Stranger, tell the Spartans that we lie here obedient to their laws.” This ancient memorial is located on a small hill across the national road from the modern one. After visiting, the tour will return to Athens.
