Next to it is the (140 meters long) Averof battleship that in the WWI dominated the Aegean Sea and took place in many naval battles as the flagship of the Aegean fleet where it triumphed. It also took place in WWI as escort ship to protect convoys and was de-commissioned in 1952. We may enter the ship (optional). - Kotsanas Museum of Ancient Greek Technology - Flame throwers in ancient Greece? Yes, among other unbelievable war technology innovations in this small, yet very important museum that will help us comprehend the enormous advances made in the Classical period of antiquity! Inventions of any kind that will actually make your jaws fall are stacked here and one surprise follows another. Don’t forget to take some souvenir of the famous “Antikythera Mechanism”! - War Museum Athens - Freedom is the sure possession of those alone who have the courage to defend it (Pericles). This is why our National Anthem is dedicated to freedom, since for long periods we were conquered by various invaders. The Athens War Museum, largest in Southeastern Europe, depicts the fights for freedom throughout the centuries, through the weapons that Greeks used each time and the strategies they followed.
