Its ruins are next to the modern town of Pamukkale in Turkey and now form an archaeological museum recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The site includes the Tomb of Philip the Apostle.
The hot springs have served as a spa since the 2nd century BC, attracting many visitors who retired or passed away there. The extensive necropolis is filled with sarcophagi, most notably that of Marcus Aurelius Ammianos, which features a relief showing the earliest known example of a crank and rod mechanism. The grand baths were built with massive stone blocks without cement and included various interconnected closed and open sections. There are deep niches in the inner section, including the bath, library, and gymnasium.

- Pamukkale Thermal Pools - Pamukkale, meaning “cotton castle” in Turkish, is a natural site in Denizli, southwestern Turkey. The area is renowned for a carbonate mineral deposited by flowing water. It is situated in Turkey’s Inner Aegean region, in the River Menderes valley, which enjoys a temperate climate for most of the year.
The ancient Greco-Roman city of Hierapolis was constructed atop the white “castle,” which measures approximately 2,700 meters long, 600 meters wide, and 160 meters high. It is visible from the hills on the opposite side of the valley in the town of Denizli, 20 km away.
Known as Pamukkale (Cotton Castle) or ancient Hierapolis (Holy City), this area has attracted visitors to its thermal springs since Classical antiquity. The Turkish name refers to the surface of the gleaming, snow-white limestone, shaped over millennia by calcium-rich springs. Slowly dripping down the vast mountainside, mineral-rich waters foam and gather in terraces, cascading over stalactites into milky pools below. Legend suggests that the formations are solidified cotton (the area’s main crop) left out to dry by giants.
