Gatun Lake (Spanish: Lago Gatún) is a significant artificial freshwater lake located south of Colón, Panama. Situated at roughly 26 meters (85 feet) above sea level, it plays a crucial role in the Panama Canal, facilitating the transit of ships for 33 kilometers (21 miles) across the Isthmus of Panama. The lake was officially formed on June 27, 1913, when the spillway gates at Gatun Dam were closed, marking the beginning of the lake’s filling process. At that time, the water level was approximately 14.6 meters (48 feet) above sea level, with expectations to reach operational levels within six months. Visitors can enjoy observing the local wildlife and the vessels navigating through Gatun Lake as part of the Panama Canal.
