Situated approximately 26 meters (85 feet) above sea level, it plays a crucial role in the Panama Canal, facilitating the passage of ships for 33 kilometers (21 miles) across the Isthmus of Panama. The lake was “officially” established on June 27, 1913, when the spillway gates at Gatun Dam were closed, marking the beginning of the lake’s filling process. At that time, the water level was about 14.6 meters (48 feet) above sea level, with expectations to reach operational levels within six months. Visitors can enjoy observing the local wildlife alongside the vessels navigating through Gatun Lake.
