Lake Gatun - After witnessing a ship pass through the Pedro Miguel Locks, travel by car to the Chagres River. Here, embark on a boat tour of Gatun Lake, the largest lake within the Panama Canal. Sail alongside massive ships en route to a group of islands in Soberania National Park, home to monkeys and other wildlife within the canal’s ecosystem.
-
Agua Clara Locks - Journey to the city of Colon on the Atlantic side of the Canal, where a stop for lunch at a traditional Panamanian restaurant awaits. Post-lunch, continue by car to explore the new Panama Canal expansion, observing larger ships navigating the locks and learning about these incredible structures.
-
Fort San Lorenzo - The next destination is San Lorenzo National Park, where a visit to a remote rainforest teeming with flora and fauna is followed by a freshly prepared picnic lunch and a tour of Fort San Lorenzo. This 400-year-old Spanish fort, perched on a scenic cliff overlooking the Caribbean, is a place to recount the numerous pirate and privateer attacks at one of Panama’s most historically significant sites.
The Fort of San Lorenzo, situated on an 80-foot (25m) cliff overlooking the Caribbean Sea at the Chagres River estuary, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980, along with the fortifications of Portobelo. It was integral to the Spanish Crown’s transatlantic trade defense system.
