- Canal de Panama - The Panama Canal (Spanish: Canal de Panamá) is an 80 km (50 miles) man-made waterway in Panama that links the Caribbean Sea with the Pacific Ocean. It traverses the Isthmus of Panama and serves as a vital route for maritime trade. The canal features locks at both ends to elevate ships to Gatun Lake, an artificial lake created to minimize excavation work, 26 m (85 ft) above sea level, and then lower them at the opposite end. On this tour, we visit the Miraflores Locks to observe the canal’s operations using fresh water as elevators.
- Amador Causeway (Calzada de Amador) - Constructed in 1913 with rocks from the Culebra Cut excavation during the Panama Canal’s construction, the Causeway connects Panama City to four islands: Naos, Perico, Culebra, and Flamenco.
The area was once part of a U.S. military complex known as Fort Amador, established to protect the Pacific entrance to the Panama Canal. Today, remnants of the military installations can be seen on the islands, offering stunning views of the modern city and the Panama Canal’s breakwater on the Pacific side.
- Casco Viejo - Casco Viejo is the historic district and cultural treasure of Panama City. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997, Casco Viejo was founded around 1673 by Spanish colonialists, the Catholic Church, and other settlers. Once one of the wealthiest and most densely populated neighborhoods in the Americas, Casco Viejo fell into neglect around the 1950s. The streets are lined with buildings that have served as homes, cathedrals, churches, and government offices over the centuries, reflecting various architectural styles. Some of these structures have been meticulously restored and now house museums, gourmet restaurants, charming shops, and upscale residences. Other buildings remain in disrepair or complete ruin, with the homes of poor families standing next to renovated, exclusive properties, offering a unique glimpse into the district’s diverse history.
- Bridge of the Americas - The Bridge of the Americas spans the Pacific entrance to the Panama Canal at Balboa, near Panama City. Built by the United States between 1959 and 1962 at a cost of US$20 million, the bridge was a crucial part of the Pan-American Highway from its completion in 1962 until the opening of the parallel Centennial Bridge in 2004. This visit provides a view of the Panama Canal’s Pacific entrance and the Amador Causeway.
