It primarily serves as a gateway for exploring the tropical rainforest at Parque Nacional Soberanía, visiting Barro Colorado Island, and embarking on adventures along the majestic Río Chagres.
• Barro Colorado Island - Created in 1913 with the formation of Lake Gatun during the Panama Canal’s construction, Barro Colorado Island spans 15 square kilometers and hosts one of the world’s oldest tropical research stations. For over a century, it has been a hub for scientific research, attracting more than 400 scientists annually to study biology, ecology, evolution, and animal behavior in this rainforest-covered living laboratory.
• Centro de Interpretacion de Ciudad del Saber - Formerly Fort Clayton, the City of Knowledge is located northwest of Balboa, Panama, near the Panama Canal. It was closed in 1999 following the Torrijos-Carter Treaties. The Southern Command Network and the 193rd Infantry Brigade were headquartered here, as was the United States Army South before relocating to Fort Buchanan, Puerto Rico. The 534th Military Police Battalion, stationed here, was partly responsible for law enforcement on all Pacific side military installations. The base also provided substantial housing for military families and numerous barracks, with parts of the installation overlooking the Miraflores Locks of the Panama Canal.
