Riding the Waves of History: A Day on the Panama Canal
Trading my surfboard for a day, I embarked on a partial transit tour of the Panama Canal aboard the M/V Pacific Queen. Join me as I navigate the historic locks, savor a delightful lunch, and soak in the breathtaking views of Panama City.
Setting Sail on the Pacific Queen
As a seasoned traveler and surfer, I’ve spent countless hours chasing waves and exploring the vibrant coastlines of Central America. But this time, I decided to trade my surfboard for a different kind of adventure: a partial transit tour of the Panama Canal on the M/V Pacific Queen. The journey began with a smooth ride from our hotel to the docks, courtesy of Miguel, our courteous and knowledgeable driver. He even took a detour to show us some local wildlife, setting the tone for a day filled with discovery.
Arriving at the Flamenco Marina, the anticipation was palpable. The Pacific Queen awaited, promising a unique perspective on one of the world’s most famous waterways. As we boarded, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of excitement akin to catching the perfect wave. The boat was spacious, with both open and air-conditioned decks, offering comfort and stunning views of the canal.
Navigating the Locks
The journey through the Miraflores and Pedro Miguel Locks was a fascinating experience. Our guide, Ian, provided insightful commentary, weaving tales of the canal’s rich history and engineering marvels. As we waited for larger vessels to join us in the locks, I took the opportunity to soak in the surroundings. The heat was intense, reminiscent of the sun-drenched beaches I frequent, but the open deck provided a refreshing breeze.
Watching the massive gates of the locks open and close was mesmerizing. The process was slow, requiring patience, much like waiting for the perfect set of waves. Yet, the anticipation made the experience all the more rewarding. The Pacific Queen was dwarfed by the colossal ships that shared the locks with us, a humbling reminder of the canal’s global significance.
A Taste of Panama
As noon approached, we were treated to a delightful lunch on the lower deck. The meal was a pleasant surprise, offering a hot buffet served by attentive staff. It was a welcome break from the heat and a chance to refuel for the remainder of the journey. The air-conditioned deck provided a cool retreat, but I found myself drawn back to the open air, eager to capture every moment of this unique voyage.
The final leg of the tour took us under the iconic Bridge of the Americas, offering breathtaking views of Panama City’s skyline. As we disembarked at the Flamenco Marina, Miguel was there to greet us, just as he had promised. Reflecting on the day, I realized that this experience was more than just a tour; it was a journey through history, engineering, and the natural beauty of Panama. For anyone seeking a break from the usual surf spots, I highly recommend this canal adventure. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the best waves are the ones you don’t ride.
