El Tajin stands as the most significant pre-colonial Mesoamerican city located on Veracruz’s northern coastline. Its sphere of influence stretched from the basins of the Cazones and Tecolutla Rivers right up to the Sierra Norte de Puebla, where it left an impact on the Yohualichan archaeological site, and onward to the flatlands of the Gulf of Mexico.
In terms of urban planning, El Tajin emphasized spacious open areas surrounded by temples and inclines. It hosts the highest amount of ball courts in any city, totaling 17. This large number is interpreted as a requirement to accommodate the various cultures that could have resided in the city at different times.
El Tajin is well recognized for its adornments featuring niches, carvings, and wall paintings. The Pyramid of the Niches, aptly named for the boards lining its facades that are decorated with a total of 365 niches, is particularly notable. This has sparked interest among scholars studying Mesoamerican calendars and philosophies.
