- Tombs of the Kings - Just two kilometers from Paphos Harbour, you’ll find the remarkable necropolis known as the Tombs of the Kings, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1980. In its arid landscape, the only sounds are the waves crashing against the rocks. The Tombs of the Kings feature a collection of well-preserved underground tombs and chambers used by the residents of Nea Pafos during the Hellenistic and Roman periods. Influenced by ancient Egyptian traditions, these tombs resemble houses for the living. Despite their name, they were not used by royalty but earned their title due to their grand appearance. Carved into the native rock, the seven excavated tombs are spread over a wide area, with burial chambers opening onto a peristyle. Other tombs have niches built into the walls where bodies were placed. The tombs have been known and explored for centuries, with many discoveries made through systematic excavations. However, much information related to the tombs has reportedly been lost.
- Paphos Harbour Castle - Majestically standing at the west end of the town’s harbour, Paphos Castle (Medieval Fort) was originally a Byzantine fort built to protect the harbour. It was rebuilt by the Lusignans in the 13th century, dismantled by the Venetians, and then rebuilt by the Ottomans in the 16th century when they conquered the island. What remains today is the 1592 Ottoman restoration of the western Frankish tower with Venetian additions. An inscription above the castle’s only entrance attests to this restoration.
The main part of the castle is a large square tower with an enclosed courtyard in the center. The ground floor features a central hall with small rooms on each of its two long sides, which were used as prison cells during Ottoman rule. The roof has 12 battlements, which once held a corresponding number of cannons. The Ottomans removed the cannons in 1878 when they handed over the administration of the island to the British.
- Kato Paphos Archaeological Park - The Archaeological Park of Kato Paphos is one of Cyprus’s most significant archaeological sites and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1980.
Nicocles, the last King of Palaipafos, moved the city to its current location near the harbour at the end of the 4th century BC. From the 2nd century BC to the 4th century AD, Paphos was the capital of Cyprus.
The park includes sites and monuments from the 4th century BC to the Middle Ages, with most remains dating to the Roman period. The intricate mosaic floors of four Roman villas (the houses of Dionysos, Theseus, Aion, and Orpheus) are the impressive centerpiece of the finds, depicting various scenes from Greek mythology. The complex also includes other important monuments such as the Asklepieion, the Odeon, the Agora, the Saranta Kolones (Forty Columns) Castle, the Limeniotissa ruins of an Early Christian Basilica, and the Tombs of the Kings.
- St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church - Our journey to Christendom begins in 45 AD in Paphos, when the Apostles Paul and Barnabas visited the island, then the capital of Cyprus. Accompanied by the Evangelist John Mark on their missionary journey, Paul and Barnabas faced challenges in preaching the gospel to the gentiles. Paul was even flogged before Roman Governor Sergius Paulus in an attempt to convert him. Legend has it that Paul was tied to a stone pillar and received thirty-nine lashes for evangelizing in Paphos. He eventually succeeded, making Cyprus one of the world’s first Christian states.
