Highlights
  • Chateau of Vincennes - A symbol of the modern French state. The building affirms the power of the monarchy: it guarded the capital, whilst at the same time protecting the kings against uprisings. It was at the heart of the French monarchy until 1682, when Louis XIV chose to settle in Versailles. The keep was used as a prison from the 16th up to the 19th century: Fouquet, the Marquis de Sade, and Mirabeau were held here. Under Napoleon I it was transformed into a barracks and arsenal, and the fortress protected Paris during invasions in the 19th century.

Additional Information

The Château de Vincennes is a destination not to be missed in the area of Paris.

Its origins trace back to the 12th century when Louis VII chose to erect a hunting lodge in the Vincennes forest. The Château officially turned into a royal abode under the reign of Louis IX.

In the 14th century, the Château took on its present form: King Charles V chose to construct a large wall, towers and a keep stretching over 50 metres in height, now seen as the highest medieval fortified structure in Europe. He also initiated the construction of the Sainte-Chapelle in 1379, which wasn’t brought to completion until 1552 under Henri II’s rule.

The castle of Blandy Les Tours is a unique representation of medieval military designs in the vicinity of Paris. Having evolved from a mere fortified mansion to a fortified castle during the Hundred Years’ War, transitioning from a Renaissance residential castle to the Ferme des tours (Tower Farm), the Blandy-les-Tours castle has survived across the ages and has been owned by numerous esteemed families.
