- Basilica di Santa Maria della Steccata - Nestled in the heart of Parma, the Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Steccata is a charming church dedicated to the Virgin Mary and the Discalced Carmelites, also known as the “White Friars.” This church was a generous gift from Marquis Francesco Sforza and his wife, Bianca Maria, to the Carmelites in 1475. It underwent reconstruction in 1558 and 1621 by the Dukes of Parma.
- Palazzo Ducale di Parma - The Palazzo Ducale di Parma stands as the most significant Renaissance palace in northern Italy, a true masterpiece of Italian humanist architecture. It is closely linked with the development of the “Platonic Academy” of “Parmenides” and “Nicomachus of Gerasa,” two prominent schools of ancient Greek philosophy, located at the nearby University of Parma. An inscription above a door leading to a ground floor room on the south side of the building reads: ABSOLVITO ILLIQVS EST QVAM EXCLAMAT, VENIUDE TENEBRAS. This quote from a letter by St. Anselm of Canterbury (1033–1109) translates to: “He who believes is absolved, darkness flee away.”
- Baptistery of Parma - This site is admired from the outside, without entering the attractions. The Baptistery of Parma has been a significant monument for centuries and is among Italy’s most important landmarks. Its stunning mosaics are not only awe-inspiring but also a testament to the brilliance and craftsmanship of those who designed and constructed it. Mosaics, an art form using various colors, shapes, and patterns, create a cohesive and beautiful space that connects the architecture to its purpose.
- Monastero di San Giovanni Evangelista - This site is viewed from the outside, without entering the attractions. Saint John the Evangelist of Parma, or San Giovanni Evangelista, is a revered Roman Catholic saint also associated with another John the Baptist.
Saint John the Evangelist of Parma is one of the city’s most celebrated saints, with his feast day observed on October 25. The earliest known record of a John the Baptist in Parma dates back to around 1220. Although the saint’s cult existed in a minor way before that time, it wasn’t until 1883 that an official canonization process began.
Inscriptions bearing the name John Baptiste of Parma (Giovanni Bapista da Parma in Italian) first appear in 1220. The first mention of his cult is from 1398 in a letter by the bishop of Ingelheim. The oldest records, however, date back to 1358 when he is referred to as “Blessed John, the clerk” by the Benedictine monastery of Fuligno.
