Into the Heart of the Atlantic Forest

The moment I set foot in Parque Imperial, I felt the familiar thrill of anticipation that comes with embarking on a new adventure. The Juatinga Crossing promised an exploration of Brazil’s pristine forests, and as a biologist and environmental activist, I was eager to immerse myself in the lush Atlantic Forest. The journey began with a speedboat ride from Paraty Mirim to Praia do Cruzeiro, where the towering Pico Pão de Açúcar awaited us. The climb was challenging, but the reward was a breathtaking view that stretched across the verdant canopy and out to the azure sea.

The forest enveloped us in its cool embrace, a welcome respite from the sun. As we trekked through the dense foliage, the air was alive with the sounds of wildlife. Each step brought us closer to the heart of this vibrant ecosystem, a reminder of the importance of preserving such natural wonders. The Atlantic Forest, with its rich biodiversity, is a testament to the resilience of nature, and I felt a deep sense of responsibility to protect it for future generations.

The Caiçara Connection

One of the most enriching aspects of the Juatinga Crossing was the opportunity to connect with the Caiçara culture. Our guide, Eugênia, was a force of nature herself, balancing rigidity with sensitivity. Her guidance was both firm and nurturing, ensuring that we experienced the best of what the crossing had to offer. Her insistence on punctuality meant that we never missed a sunset or a chance to swim in the sun-warmed waters of Praia dos Antigos.

Staying in native homes allowed us to experience the warmth and hospitality of the Caiçara people. Sharing meals and stories with them was a highlight of the journey, offering a glimpse into their way of life. The simplicity and harmony with which they live alongside nature was inspiring, and it reinforced my commitment to advocating for the preservation of such communities and their environments.

Waterfalls and Wonder

The final day of the crossing took us to the stunning Saco Bravo Waterfall. Rising early, we set out on the trail, the anticipation of the waterfall driving us forward. The sight of the cascading water, framed by the lush greenery, was nothing short of magical. It was a moment of pure wonder, a reminder of the beauty that lies in untouched nature.

As we made our way back, the trail led us along paradisiacal beaches, each more beautiful than the last. Praia de Antiguinhos, Praia de Antigos, and Praia do Sono were serene and untouched, their beauty a testament to the power of conservation. Walking along these shores, I felt a renewed sense of purpose in my work as an environmental activist.
