Highlights
  • CentralWorld - Meet the group at Groove at Central World then drive 90 min to Ayutthaya.
  • Nonthaburi - Nonthaburi, one of Thailand’s central provinces, was established by the Act Establishing Changwat Samut Prakan, Changwat Nonthaburi, Changwat Samut Sakhon, and Changwat Nakhon Nayok, Buddhist Era 2489, which came into effect on May 9.

Neighboring provinces are (from north clockwise) Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, Pathum Thani, Bangkok, and Nakhon Pathom. Nonthaburi is the most densely populated province after Bangkok. The Bang Kwang Central Prison is located here.

  • Wat Chaiwatthanaram - Situated on the bank of the Maenam Chao Phraya, west of the City Island, Wat Chaiwatthanaram was built in 1630 by King Prasat Thong to honor his mother. The temple was designed as a replica of the Angkor Temple.

One of Ayutthaya’s most visited historical sites, Wat Chaiwatthanaram rests on the Chao Phraya riverbank, west of the City Island. Commissioned in 1630 by King Prasat Thong to honor his mother, the temple features architecture influenced by Cambodia’s Angkor temple. Its unique feature is a large central prang (Khmer-style pagoda) surrounded by smaller prangs, symbolizing Mount Sumeru, the gods’ mountain in Hindu belief. The temple’s nighttime lighting enhances its exotic beauty.

  • Temple of the Reclining Buddha (Wat Lokayasutharam) - This monastery is over a kilometer behind Wat Suanluangsopsawan, adjacent to Wat Worachettharam. It can be accessed via the road inside the Distillery Plant compound or the road behind the Phlapphla Trimuk (three-gabled roof pavilion). The monastery is located in the Ancient Palace area. Continue past Wat Woraphot and Wat Worachettharam to reach the open-air site of the large reclining Buddha, which is made of brick and covered with plaster, and is approximately 29 meters long. The ruins of large hexagonal pillars near the image are believed to be the remains of the Ubosot.

  • Wat Phra Sri Sanphet - Wat Phra Si Sanphet was located within the Grand Palace compound—the foundations of which are still visible—and served as the royal chapel, similar to Wat Phra Kaeo in Bangkok. This Wang Lung Palace (Royal Palace) was built by King U-Thong upon the city’s founding. Initially used as a residential palace, it was converted into a monastery during King Ramathibodi I’s reign. When King Borom Trai Lokanat ordered the construction of new living quarters, this residential palace was transformed into a temple, leading to the establishment of Wat Phra Si Sanphet. During Ayutthaya’s peak, this was the city’s largest temple. The three main chedis, which have been restored, contain the ashes of three Ayutthaya kings.

  • Historic City of Ayutthaya - Lunch at a local restaurant in Ayutthaya.

  • Wat Mahathat - Wat Mahathat is located in front of the Grand Palace to the east, next to Pa Than Bridge. The temple is believed to be one of Ayutthaya’s oldest, possibly built by King Boromaraja I (1370-88).

Wat Phra Mahathat, Thailand, was a royal temple of the Ayutthaya Kingdom. It is one of the oldest and most significant temples in Ayutthaya’s history, as it housed the Buddha’s holy relic. Many important royal ceremonies of the Ayutthaya era were hosted here. When the Ayutthaya Kingdom fell in 1767, Wat Phra Mahathat was severely damaged by fire and subsequently abandoned. Today, the temple is part of the Ayutthaya Historical Park. Attractions at Wat Phra Mahathat in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya include remains of important old buildings such as pagodas, octagonal pagodas, a royal hall, small temples, murals under a Bodhi tree, and the famous sandstone Ayutthaya-style Buddha head entwined in a tree’s roots.

Great tour for solo travelers - Alex was our tour guide and I think he did an amazing job taking us back to the past to learn so much about the rich history and culture of Thailand. I appreciate his humor and ability to make this tour as lovely as possible even with the humidity. We had pad Thai at a local restaurant and were given two bottles of water per person during the trip to keep hydrated. I met another solo traveler while on this tour so I definitely recommend for people who are looking for solo things to do. Thank you, Alex!

A great day and reliable company with great tour guide - Well organised tour. Our guide, Paul, was knowledgeable, engaging, humorous and we could understand him well. He was very passionate about making sure all went well for us, his guests and never once was unapproachable. His knowledge was exceptional about Ayutthaya history. The tour was very well organised with pick up from river city and drop off at national stadium. This made sure we all got back at reasonable hour - I like another tour we took earlier in the week which insisted they drop us all off at various hotels - added 3 hours onto end time due to Bangkok traffic. So gold star for that one on this tour. Made much more sense. Lunch was nice. Plenty of free time at the sites for pictures etc Only thing I’d say was there was no communication before hand- I even wrote and asked a question but it was ignored. You need to wear over knees and shoulders for this tour. Info not included on booking info and when you google Ayutthaya is says it’s relaxed on dress code- but it’s not. Luckily had emergency trousers and shirt in my bag!

Rich Cultural Excursion - Our tour guide and driver were simply outstanding! They were very personable, attentive, patient and knowledgeable. Boeing, our guide, shared a rich history of everything, including personal anecdotes and he even sang the Thai national anthem. Mr. K, the driver, provided us with cold, bottled water and cold baby wipes after every stop, even adding a treat after one of the stops. The lunch included a wide selection of dishes and ours were great. The coconut smoothies were also delightful. Overall, great experience, and worth it. Highly recommend this excursion!

Amazing - Amazing experience. Uncle Sam (tour guide) went above and beyond to make this trip very memorable. Recommend to request him if possible. Lunch was very tasty. If you are doing this tour try to book on the first or last Wednesday of the month. You will be dropped off at MBK shopping mall at the end and enjoy a free Muay Tai Fighting event.

Relaxing day trip - We saw 4 temple ruins, ate a large and tasty lunch, and appreciated our guide Paul's historical knowledge and fun sense of humor. The bus ride out and back was comfortable, and although we left earlier than we would have liked, by leaving early we avoided the traffic and especially the heat that would have come later in the day. 10/10 would definitely recommend.

Ayutthaya. Shop with another site - The reason why I gave this 3 stars is the price. My group paid $15 more per person for the same experience as everyone else in the group we went with. Even though there is a price guarantee the others took a different tour group which happened to be the one that my group was placed with. So same EXACT EXPERIENCE but $15 more. So look online elsewhere. The experience itself was good, the sites were different and unique. Also there were umbrellas at every site. I thought it was pricy for what I paid however had it been the other amount which the others paid ~ $35-40 USD it would have been worth it. It made the experience less desirable.
