Discovering the Heart of Boa Vista: Povoação Velha

My journey began in Povoação Velha, the oldest village on the island, nestled at the foot of the majestic Rocha Estância. This quaint town, once the capital of Boa Vista until 1810, is a treasure trove of history and culture.

Walking through the cobblestone streets, I felt as though I had stepped back in time. The Chapel of Santo António, built in 1800, and the Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição stood as silent witnesses to centuries of history. The air was filled with the scent of the ocean, and the gentle hum of village life was a soothing backdrop to my exploration.

One of the highlights of Povoação Velha was visiting the local art workshop. Here, artisans crafted beautiful straw hats, jewelry, and ceramics using local and recycled materials. The reserve’s commitment to protecting its unique ecosystem is evident, and it’s a place that truly embodies the spirit of sustainable travel.
