Artesonraju Peak, standing at 6,025 meters, is one of the nearly 50 peaks in the Cordillera Blanca, renowned for its outstanding mountaineering conditions. This pyramid-shaped mountain, perpetually blanketed in ice and snow, is a sight of unparalleled beauty, nestled between the Santa Cruz Massif gorge to the north and the Parón gorge to the south. It is often regarded as the iconic mountain featured in the Paramount Pictures introduction.
From the high plateau near the Parón Gorge, the peak rises 1,025 meters. Climbers typically complete the ascent in 8-12 hours round-trip. The International French Adjectival System (IFAS) rates it as TD+: very difficult +, on the South Ridge route, and D: Difficult, on the “normal” route.
Artesonraju presents two main climbing routes: the first ascends via the North Edge, originating in the Santa Cruz Gorge, while the second climbs the southeast face from Parón Lake, located at the end of the gorge sharing its name.
