Yanapaccha Peru Expeditions - The journey begins in Huaraz, passing through Yungay and into the breathtaking Llanganuco Valley, where the turquoise lakes of Chinancocha and Orconcocha are a sight to behold. The adventure continues to Km 42, the starting point of the hike. From there, the ascent to Camp Morrena begins, where the camp is set up. In the afternoon, the focus is on essential mountaineering skills, such as knot tying, anchoring, and other crucial techniques.
Duration: 3.5 hours driving | 4 hours hiking.
Equipment & Technique Course
Yanapaccha Peru Expeditions - This day involves a brief 20-minute walk to the Yanapaccha Glacier, where a basic ice climbing course is conducted, covering:
- Equipment use and handling
- Essential knot techniques
- Proper use of crampons
- Rope management and team roping
- Ice anchoring methods
- Fundamental ice climbing techniques
Rescue and Self-rescue Course
Cordillera Blanca Summit - The route navigates through various moraines to reach the glacier, where participants gear up, rope up, and start climbing an ice wall. After about 1.5 hours, a crevasse is reached, where training continues with a more advanced course:
- Reviewing equipment use and climbing techniques
- Practicing essential knots
- Glacier climbing techniques
- Safety and self-rescue methods in ice climbing
- Ice and snow anchoring
- Rescue and self-rescue training
Campo Morena – Cumbre 5460 m / 17,913 ft – Campo Morrena 5000 m / 16,404 ft – Huaraz
Yanapaccha Peru Expeditions - The ascent begins at 3:00 AM, crossing a moraine before reaching the expansive glacier. From there, a 180-meter ice wall (50-60° incline) is climbed to reach the summit, offering breathtaking panoramic views of Huascarán, Chopicalqui, Pisco, Huandoys, and other surrounding peaks.
After enjoying the summit, the descent follows a ridge with stunning views of Chacraraju, continuing down to the moraine and finally reaching Km 42, where transport will be waiting.
Ascent: Approximately 5 to 6 hours
Descent to camp: Approximately 3 to 4 hours

Nevado Yanapaccha, situated in the Cordillera Blanca within Huascarán National Park, serves as an excellent location for mountaineering training. It is accessible almost all year and offers a moderate challenge, with a final ascent angle of 65°. Renowned for its numerous crevasses and ice walls, this mountain is ideal for honing ice climbing and rescue skills.
The name Yanapaccha is derived from the Quechua words “Yana” (black) and “Paccha” (waterfall), translating to “Waterfall in the Black Mountain.” A highlight of the Cordillera Blanca, the highest tropical mountain range globally, it is part of the magnificent Andes that stretch across South America. This region is a paradise for hikers and outdoor lovers, featuring over 50 peaks.
