Additional Information

On this tour you will discover the unique region around the Bay of All Saints, the Recôncavo. This is the most African region of Brazil that received the first sugar cane plantations and the first slaves, imported from black Africa. This is a “back to the roots” tour that will give you an unforgettable experience of expatriation.
Leaving Salvador, we pass the poor suburbs of Salvador and, later, a succession of fields for agriculture and grasslands. A whirling road passing by bamboo plantations takes us first to the city of Santo Amaro where we visit the amazing and busy local market and some streets and squares in the center. Then, the road takes us to the historical city of Cachoeira that lies majestically in the valley of the Paraguaçu river. Here, we stroll through the picturesque streets with its old colonial houses and churches and there will be time for lunch. In the afternoon we visit the cigar factory of Dannemann where the famous top class cigars are still hand rolled.

Location
Largo Terreiro de Jesus
In front of the bar and restaurant, Cantina da Lua.

Explore the roots of Bahia - Dirk was my tour guide. His knowledge of Bahia comes from decades of having lived in Salvador and being part of the community. He was awesome. I learned a lot. I spent three months in Salvador in 1998. I traveled to Santa Amaro to see Caetano Veloso perform in his home town, but I knew nothing about the city. Dirk did a great job of telling the history of the region. I also enjoyed our encounters withe people we met. Dirk is an excellent guide. I highly recommend this trip to those people who want to explore Afro- Brazilian culture.

Well-run and varied countryside trip that will enrich your stay in Salvador - Nick was a fantastic tour guide for this really interesting jaunt away from Salvador. The scenery - both agricultural and urban - was beautiful, and it was a nice getaway. The trip offered a lot of variety in that we first stopped at this gorgeous tiny town for an incredible view of the bay, then we visited Santa Marta and saw it's bustling market. Finally, we drove to Capocheira and walked its charming streets and lunched by the river. On the way home, we stopped at a tiny, pristine cigar factory where we learned a bit about cigar agriculture and got to see some women hand roll and hand cut the cigars. Altogether, the trip was very manageable (8 hours), and a nice complement to our stay in Salvador.
