Highlights

Royal Botanical Gardens - The Royal Botanic Gardens in Peradeniya are located approximately 5.5 km west of Kandy in Sri Lanka’s Central Province. In 2016, the gardens attracted 1.2 million local visitors and 400,000 international tourists. Situated near the Mahaweli River, the longest river in Sri Lanka, the gardens are famous for their orchid collection. They feature over 4,000 plant species, including orchids, spices, medicinal plants, and palm trees. The “National Herbarium of Sri Lanka” is also part of the gardens.

Kandy War Cemetery - During World War II, Kandy was home to the South East Asian Command Headquarters and played a crucial role in the war effort. The cemetery, formerly known as the Pitakande Military Cemetery, was taken over by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and is now a permanent war cemetery. It serves as the final resting place for soldiers of the British Empire who died during the war. The cemetery includes graves of 107 British soldiers, 35 East African soldiers, 26 Sri Lankan soldiers, 23 Indian soldiers, 6 Canadian soldiers, 3 Italian soldiers, and 1 French soldier. Over 75% of these soldiers served in the army, with the remainder belonging to the Air Force, Navy, and National Fire Service.

Bahiravokanda Vihara Buddha Statue - About 2 kilometers from Kandy’s city center is the Sri Maha Bodhi Viharaya, also known as the Bahirawakanda Temple, a Theravada Buddhist temple. The temple is renowned for its massive white statue of Lord Buddha, known as the Bahirawakanda Vihara Buddha Statue, which stands at 88 feet tall, making it one of the tallest Buddha statues on the island.

Kandy View Point - To fully appreciate the beauty of Kandy, visit the Kandy View Point, also known as Arthur’s Seat, located 1790 feet above sea level. From this vantage point, you can enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of the city, including the lush greenery surrounding Kandy Lake, the Temple of the Tooth Relic, and the city’s iconic buildings against a backdrop of blue sky. The viewing platform was established during the British colonial period. According to legend, a planter named Arthur used to view the city from a stone seat under a tree in front of his bungalow, which was located just above the current viewing point.

Kandy Lake Club - Cultural Dance Show - The Kandyan dances, also known as up-country (udarata natum) dances, are considered the classical dance tradition of Sri Lanka. Traditionally performed by male dancers, the technique incorporates dynamic movements, powerful footwork, leaps, and whirls, partly influenced by South Indian dance forms. The repertoire includes elements from ancient indigenous ritual dances and South Indian dances.

Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic - The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic houses one of the most important Buddhist relics, a tooth of the Buddha, which was brought to Sri Lanka in the 4th century AD. The relic has played a significant role in the region’s politics, with legend stating that whoever possesses the tooth governs the area. The original temple was built in 1603, and the current structure dates back to the 18th century.

Unbelievable introduction to Kandy and Sri Lanka - Wow what an incredible introduction to Kandy (and Sri Lanka) we had with Mr Irfan. The tour with Mr Irfan struck the perfect balance between informative, entertaining, fulfilling yet somehow relaxing without feeling like we were rushed around. He is a very, very kind man who looks after you very well, making sure you are watered, fed and having a great time. Kandy is such a beautiful city and made even more beautiful by the sights Mr Irfan takes the time to show you. We saw the real downtown Kandy as well as some stunning heritage sights. I really recommend upgrading the tour to include the Ambuluwawa Tower too, it’s out of the way but so, so worth it. I’ll recommend Mr Irfan every single time
