Eating Your Way Through Slo
Gina Yu

Bishop's Peak
Start of the day with negative calories by hiking this uphill, mostly uncovered trail. It's quite the sweat, but the 360 degree views of SLO are worth it. Don't forget your hat and sunscreen!
California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly)
If hiking isn't your thing, then I'd recommend a leisurely stroll around my alma mater, Cal Poly. Be sure to visit the University Union (UU) and check out the gym - probably the nicest public school gym you'll find!
Splash Cafe & Artisan Bakery
You can't visit SLO without having some Splash clam chowder. It is the best clam chowder in California... and dare I say... the nation! Definitely add on the seafood topping and a grilled cheese. If you want to picnic on the beach, visit their Pismo beach location instead (15 minutes south on the 101).
Bubble Gum Alley
So disgusting and so touristy, but it's worth a look. Don't forget the bubbleyum if you want to make your own lasting mark in SLO
Downtown San Luis Obispo
It's changed a lot since I went to school here and now offers great shopping and snacking. Spend the afternoon walking around and exploring.
Firestone Bar & Grill
Tri-tip sandwich, basket of seasoned fries, a beer and a spot outdoors for people watching. That's the definition of a great afternoon. When you're finished, get back in line and order another sandwich or 2 to-go. Your taste buds will thank you later.
San Luis Obispo Farmers' Market
"Farmer's" is loved by both locals and students. Check out the local farmer's fare and artisans and catch a live band. You have to grab some chocolate covered caramel apple slices and Cowgirl Cookies.
Novo Restaurant & Lounge
The food is decent, but the ambiance is great. Try to get a seat outside by the creek (don't worry, they've got plenty of heat lamps). Try the caesar salad and the salmon bisque.
Mother's Tavern
I guess the kids are calling it "MoTav" now, but when I went to school in SLO, it was "Mother's." The bartenders make delicious shots if you just tell them what you like, and there is plenty of space for mingling and/or dancing.
I would stay at: Madonna Inn
I've never stayed here, but always wanted to. Each room is themed out differently and the urinal in the men's bathroom is a waterfall! (don't ask me how I know that).
