According to myth, the eruption of the nearby Kinsacha Volcano once made the Inca feel vulnerable, leading them to construct a sanctuary dedicated to Wiracocha, the deity of the cosmos and earth. Spanning several hundred hectares, this sanctuary was erected in the 15th Century, coinciding with the Inca’s expansion into Ecuador. However, the structure was nearly obliterated by Spanish conquerors in the 16th Century.
