Designed by military architect Antonio da Sangallo the Younger, the fortress’s construction required the demolition of about a quarter of the city. The structure was divided into two complexes: a larger fortress on the Landone hill and a smaller one, called “Tenaglia”, situated lower and connected to the first by three fortified passages.
