Historically, the fortress served as a lookout point for monitoring the advance of Ottoman forces into the heart of Albania. During the Ottoman period, the castle served as the residence of Scanderbeg’s sister, Mamica Kastrioti. The locale and its castle held a special place in Scanderbeg’s heart, and he would often retreat here for relaxation. Petrelë Castle, positioned 15 km south of Tirana, is renowned for its historical significance, particularly due to its proximity to the ancient Illyrian city of Persqop dating back more than 3000 years, and for its stunning scenery. During ancient times, Petrelë was referred to as Petralba in literature, which in Greek implies ‘The stone of the Albanians’. The reason behind this name becomes clear upon observing the town and its castle, which are constructed on a massive rock atop a petite mountain. Petrelë Castle ranks as one of the most ancient edifices in the vicinity.
