Philadelphia’s renowned Seventh Ward was a vibrant and lively community inhabited by numerous Black Philadelphians and immigrants from the late 18th century until the 1960s. By 1900, the Ward housed about 30% of Black Philadelphians. With the largest Black population in the city, the Seventh Ward was the heart of Black culture and home to many historical and contemporary African-American schools, churches, and institutions, as well as abolitionists, educators, athletes, and political and women’s civil rights activists.
