Additional Information

Philadelphia’s renowned Seventh Ward was a vibrant and lively community inhabited by numerous Black Philadelphians and immigrants from the late 18th century until the 1960s. By 1900, the Ward housed about 30% of Black Philadelphians. With the largest Black population in the city, the Seventh Ward was the heart of Black culture and home to many historical and contemporary African-American schools, churches, and institutions, as well as abolitionists, educators, athletes, and political and women’s civil rights activists.

The Seventh Ward was so intriguing that W.E.B. Du Bois traveled to Philadelphia to study the Black population living in the ward. While residing in the Seventh Ward, Dr. Du Bois conducted thorough door-to-door interviews with Black Philadelphians from various backgrounds.

This is your chance to join us as we delve into this still captivating community that played a crucial role in Black Philadelphia history.
