Sailing the Caribbean: A Day on the Phoenix Catamaran
Drawn by the allure of a luxury catamaran sail, I embarked on a journey through the stunning sights of St. Maarten. With the promise of snorkeling, fine food, and breathtaking beaches, I couldn’t resist the call of the sea.
Setting Sail on the Phoenix
The morning sun was just beginning to cast its golden glow over the Caribbean Sea as I made my way down the pier in Philipsburg. The directions were spot on, guiding me through the port and towards the meeting point where I spotted the crew in their distinctive blue shirts emblazoned with “Phoenix.” As a former professional surfer, I’ve spent countless hours on the water, but there’s something uniquely thrilling about stepping aboard a luxury catamaran, ready to explore the stunning sights of St. Maarten.
Once checked in, we were divided into two groups, each with its own schedule for lunch and swimming. I opted for Group 1, eager to enjoy the freshly cooked lunch before diving into the warm Caribbean waters. Shoes off, we boarded the Phoenix, greeted by an inviting spread of fruit and cookies, and a selection of drinks to kickstart our adventure. The safety briefing was quick and efficient, and soon we were gliding out of the marina, the gentle sway of the catamaran beneath us.
Snorkeling at Little Bay
Our first stop was Little Bay, a snorkeler’s paradise nestled beneath the protective outcrop of Fort Amsterdam. The waters here are calm, making it an ideal spot for both beginners and seasoned snorkelers like myself. Equipped with snorkeling gear provided by the crew, I plunged into the crystal-clear waters, eager to explore the vibrant underwater world.
The sea life was abundant, with colorful fish darting around the sunken helicopter and submarine that lay on the ocean floor. It was a surreal experience, swimming through this underwater playground, the sun filtering through the water in shimmering beams. For those who preferred to stay dry, the sundeck offered a perfect vantage point to soak up the sun and enjoy the breathtaking views.
Aerial Spectacle at Maho Beach
After our snorkeling adventure, we sailed past the famous Maho Beach, known for its proximity to the Princess Juliana International Airport. As we approached, the anticipation on board was palpable. We watched in awe as planes roared overhead, seemingly close enough to touch. It’s a sight that never fails to thrill, even for someone like me who’s no stranger to adrenaline-pumping experiences.
Our final stop was at Mullet Bay, where we anchored for a leisurely afternoon. The crew laid out a delicious spread of chicken teriyaki, coconut rice, and Caesar salad, a feast that was as satisfying as the views. With a full belly, I took to the water once more, this time floating lazily on a noodle, the sun warming my skin as I drifted along.
As the day drew to a close, we made our way back to the marina, the sun dipping below the horizon in a blaze of color. It was a day well spent, a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure, and a reminder of why I love this island life so much. If you’re ever in St. Maarten, don’t miss the chance to set sail on the Phoenix. It’s an experience that captures the essence of the Caribbean, a place where time slows down and the beauty of the ocean takes center stage.
