Old and New Angkor Wat
What the world knows as Angkor Wat is actually a collection of numerous temples that were part of this ancient Kingdom. The tour starts with the most renowned “old” and “new” Angkor Wat temples. Upon first sight, these temples, one of the Wonders of the World, impress with their immense scale and beauty. Time is taken to explore these two expansive temples, admiring their stunning architecture, statues, and carvings.
South Gate - Bayon Temple - Elephant Temple - Leper King
After morning tea, the exploration of the ancient Kingdom continues with the majestic South Gate and Bayon Temple, famous for its stone carvings. Before lunch, the tour visits the Royal Terraces, which include the Terrace of the Elephants to the South and the Terrace of the Leper King to the North, forming the Eastern boundary of the ancient Royal Palace grounds.
These terraces face the parade grounds where processions, parades, and other events were held. The King would observe these events from the Elephant terrace, which also served as an audience hall for listening to the citizens’ complaints and issues.
Lunch
Guests will enjoy a traditional Khmer lunch at a local restaurant and relax before continuing to explore more of this vast and beautiful ancient Kingdom.
Ta Prohm
Ta Prohm, one of the most famous temples in Angkor, is known for the enormous trees and massive roots growing out of its walls. This jungle temple was featured in the adventure movie “The Tomb Raider,” with several scenes filmed at Ta Prohm.
Ta Prohm remains largely as it was when discovered, with Henri Marchal, curator and conservator of the EFEO, conducting basic clearing work in 1920. Only essential work to prevent further deterioration and collapse was done. The stunning jungle setting and the temple’s original state have made it one of the most visited Angkor temples.
Rolous Group
To conclude the day, the tour travels to the “Roluos Group” of temples, some of the earliest permanent structures built by the Khmer. These temples mark the beginning of the classical period of Khmer civilization, dating from the late 9th century. Some were entirely constructed with bricks, while others used laterite or sandstone.
The group consists of three major temples: Bakong, Lolei, and Preah Ko, along with the small Prasat Prei Monti. At both Bakong and Lolei, there are contemporary Buddhist monasteries where visitors can observe monks in their daily routines.
