- Choeung Ek Genocidal Center - Your tour guide will pick you up from your hotel and drive you to the killing fields of Choeung Ek Genocide Center – 9 miles south of Phnom Penh. The notorious killing fields have a tragic history. Once an orchard and a Chinese cemetery, the Khmer Rouge, led by Pol Pot, transformed the area into the killing fields, where approximately 20,000 victims were executed. Over three years, they massacred and buried 2.5 million people. After paying respects to the deceased, return to Phnom Penh to visit Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S21). Meaning “hill of the poisonous trees,” Pol Pot converted a once-popular high school into a high-security prison. 20,000 people were imprisoned there, many of whom were tortured for information. Today, it serves as a museum and a reminder of darker days. Your guide will return you to your hotel or guesthouse. - Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum - The most infamous of the 189 known interrogation centers in Cambodia was S-21, housed in a former school and now called Tuol Sleng for the hill on which it stands. Between 14,000 and 17,000 prisoners were detained and tortured there, often in primitive brick cells built in former classrooms.
