Silver Pagoda - First stop: Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda, showcasing Cambodian architecture and the living art of the royal family. The palace is a complex of buildings serving as the official residence of Cambodia’s King. Known in Khmer as Preah Barom Reacheaveang Chaktomuk Serey Mongkol, it has been occupied by Cambodian monarchs since its construction in the 1860s. Built between 1866 and 1870 after King Norodom moved the royal capital from Oudong city, the Silver Pagoda is located south of the Royal Palace. It is an ideal place for those interested in religion, especially Buddhism, and holds great cultural and religious significance. Duration: 60 minutes.
-
National Museum of Cambodia - Second stop: The National Museum of Cambodia in Phnom Penh, home to the world’s finest collection of Khmer sculpture and culture. Housed in a graceful terracotta structure of traditional design built between 1917 and 1920, the museum displays ancient sculptures, including an immense bronze reclining Vishnu statue recovered from the Western Mebon temple near Angkor Wat in 1936, an eight-armed Vishnu statue from the 6th century, and striking statues of Shiva from the 9th to 11th centuries. Visitors typically start on the left and proceed in a clockwise, chronological direction. Duration: 90 minutes.
-
Wat Phnom - Third stop: Wat Phnom, a sacred Buddhist temple and popular gathering spot for New Year celebrations, located in the city. Standing 27 meters high on a tree-covered knoll, Wat Phnom is the highest point in town. According to legend, the first pagoda on this site was erected in 1372 to house four Buddha statues deposited by the Mekong River and discovered by Lady Penh. The city is named Phnom Penh, meaning ‘hill of Penh,’ after this legend. Duration: 45 minutes.
-
Independence Monument - Fourth stop: Independence Monument. On our way to a restaurant for lunch, we’ll have the opportunity to view the monument, which was erected to mark Cambodia’s liberation from French rule, which lasted from 1863 to 1953. Built in 1958 and inaugurated in 1962 during the Sangkum Reastr regime led by King Sihanouk.
-
Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum - Fifth stop: Tuol Sleng. After a lunch break of about 1 hour, we’ll visit Tuol Sleng prison to learn about the brutal regime that controlled Cambodia from April 17, 1975, to January 7, 1979. Led by the Communist party, the regime turned into a dictatorship that inflicted great suffering on Cambodians. Duration: 90 minutes.
-
Choeung Ek Genocidal Center - Sixth stop: Killing Field. Between 1975 and 1978, about 20,000 men, women, children, and infants detained and tortured at S-21 prison were transported to the extermination camp of Choeung Ek. Today, it is a peaceful place where visitors can learn about the horrors that occurred here decades ago. Duration: 1 hour.
-
Russian Market - Seventh stop: Russian Market, known locally as Phsar Toul Tom Pong. The market got its name in the 1980s when Russians working and living in Phnom Penh preferred shopping there. It offers a wide range of items, including street food, clothes, cosmetics, souvenirs, and motorcycle parts. Psar Tuol Tom Poung, a type of clothing made by locals, is especially popular.
