Highlights
  • Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum - Tuol Sleng was a former high school that the Khmer Rouge turned into a centre for interrogation, torture and death. Today it is a museum of torture and serves to remind visitors of the terrible atrocities that came to pass in Cambodia. 17,000 people passed through the gates of this prison and only seven lived to tell the tale.
  • Choeung Ek Genocidal Center - Prisoners from Tuol Sleng followed this same route to their fate. An old Chinese cemetery, Choeng Ek was turned into an extermination camp for political prisoners. The remains of 8985 people were exhumed from mass graves and are kept in a memorial stupa here. Despite the horrors of the past, it is a peaceful place to go and a tranquil spot to reflect on the tragic events that engulfed Cambodia and its people.

Additional Information

The Khmer Rouge transformed Toul Sleng High School into a hub of brutal interrogations, tortures, and executions. Each room displays an extensive collection of photographs depicting the multitude of victims. You’ll navigate the space with care, examining the implements once used on the incarcerated. Later, journeying roughly 15km southwest from Phnom Penh, we’ll reach Choeung Ek. Before 1975, this site was an orchard and a Chinese graveyard. Under the Khmer Rouge’s reign, it turned into a mass killing field where over 17,000 people were mercilessly killed, most after enduring agonizing torture and suffering at Toul Sleng Prison. Today, Choeung Ek stands as a poignant field of mass burial sites and a memorial stupa laden with thousands of human skulls. Post-visit, we’ll return to the hotel and conclude the trip.

An excellent and enlightening tour. - Our guide was exceptional. She spoke excellent English and made the whole experience come alive. Her knowledge of the history, background, personalities involved and geo-political involvement enabled her to paint a vivid, yet respectful and sensitive, picture of Cambodia’s history in relation to both its neighbours and international players. Without her personal input we would not have gained such a thorough and enlightening experience. We gained a real insight into the trauma, suffering and hardship the country has gone through in its recent past. It’s important to keep alive the memories of these atrocities lest we allow history to repeat itself. I wholeheartedly recommend this tour. It’s well worth the money.

Outstanding tour guide. - Not everyone’s choice of tour but for me, it is important to see first hand what people had to endure. Not only to understand but to acknowledge, remember and pay our respects to the thousands of individuals who suffered at the hands of genocidal regimes, such as the Khmer Rouge. Our tour guide, Neang was outstanding. She was so thorough in explaining the modern political history of Cambodia since the 1950s so we were able to understand how Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge came to power. Genocide is not an easy topic to talk about but Neang did it with real compassion and sensitivity. Having cold drinks and A/c in our minivan was very welcome between the 2 sites. The 4 hours passed very quickly and the 3 of us benefited from our private tour, as we were able to ask as many questions as we wanted, which were all answered as Neang is very knowledgeable.

How can this have happened - A very moving and heartbreaking experience that we will remember forever. Our guard Sam was excellent, very knowledgeable and knew when we needed quiet time with our own thoughts. It was lovely to meet the oldest survivor and shake his hand, such a brave man.

My quality professional tour - This was a fantastic tour done by a very professional tour guide Lina and driver. Both the killing field sites and the genocide of museum are very thought-provoking. We really enjoyed the information provided by lina. She also gave a lot of background information regarding Cambodia as well. I would strongly recommend starting early and doing the killing fields first before the heat of the day.
