Highlights
  • Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum - Tuol Sleng was a former high school that the Khmer Rouge turned into a centre for interrogation, torture and death. Today it is a museum of torture and serves to remind visitors of the terrible atrocities that came to pass in Cambodia. 17,000 people passed through the gates of this prison and only seven lived to tell the tale.
  • Choeung Ek Genocidal Center - Prisoners from Tuol Sleng followed this same route to their fate. An old Chinese cemetery, Choeng Ek was turned into an extermination camp for political prisoners. The remains of 8985 people were exhumed from mass graves and are kept in a memorial stupa here. Despite the horrors of the past, it is a peaceful place to go and a tranquil spot to reflect on the tragic events that engulfed Cambodia and its people.

Additional Information

The Khmer Rouge transformed Toul Sleng High School into a hub of brutal interrogations, tortures, and executions. Each room displays an extensive collection of photographs depicting the multitude of victims. You’ll navigate the space with care, examining the implements once used on the incarcerated. Later, journeying roughly 15km southwest from Phnom Penh, we’ll reach Choeung Ek. Before 1975, this site was an orchard and a Chinese graveyard. Under the Khmer Rouge’s reign, it turned into a mass killing field where over 17,000 people were mercilessly killed, most after enduring agonizing torture and suffering at Toul Sleng Prison. Today, Choeung Ek stands as a poignant field of mass burial sites and a memorial stupa laden with thousands of human skulls. Post-visit, we’ll return to the hotel and conclude the trip.

The Killing Fields and Genocide Museum. - I learned about the Cambodian Genocide both in school and as part of my degree however, the depth of knowledge from my guide (Ms. Sreyneang) was incredible. Not only did Neang inform me in detail about the genocide itself but the rise and fall of the Khmer Rouge. Further, she explained the current domestic political situation after the tour too. Throughout the tour, I was given time to look and experience both sites (The Killing Fields and Genocide Museum) but I was able to ask as many questions as I could. Neang shared family stories too which gave it a more personal and in depth look. I will always be thankful to Neang for operating this tour and imparting her knowledge to me.

A must do in Phnom Penh - The tour is a must do if you visit Phnom Penh. The visit to the Genocidal Museum and Killing Fields was confronting to say the least. Our Guide, Nin , (Ms Sreyneang) was informative, engaging and so knowledgeable on her country's history. She answered any questions with ease and offered great advice on how to make the most of our trip to Phnom Penh. I would highly recommend booking a tour with Nin.

Fascinating tour with a wonderful guide - Miss Chheang (Nin) was an excellent guide. Nin gave us a fascinating history of the terrible events that happened during the Pol Pot regime and lots of information about life and customs in Cambodia. Her English was excellent too. Thank you for a most interesting day.

Excellent informative Guide on a private tour - We were guided by Ms Sreyneang around these two sites on a private tour for a family of four. Ms Sreyneang was an excellent guide, she was informative and provided us with the backstory and the horrific details behind this terrible part of human history. We would fully recommend her as a guide.

Superb Guide for a Must Do - This tour enables you to explore and understand one of the most important periods in south-East Asian and world history. It is an extremely moving and, at times, harrowing experience, but one which everyone should have. Our guide is Ms Chheang Sreyneang was absolutely superb, and embellished the experience with the personal experiences of her family and friends. This added a very important human element to the things that we were seeing. Highly recommended, but not for the faint hearted.

A must visit in Phnom Penh - It’s a deep history but a must visit in this city. Recommend everyone who visit the city to come - so that we can pass on the lessons of history. Tour guide Ms. Sreyneang is knowledgeable and willing to share, we learnt a lot from her and enjoyed the conversation. The tour is well organized for people with limited time.

Learning about the Cambodian genocide - Ms. Sreyneang was my tour guide. She arrived promptly at the hotel lobby and I found her to be a knowledgeable and experienced guide. Neang was easy to talk with and it was a wonderful way for me to speak with a working mom and compare our lives juggling work and family. She was thorough in educating me about the Khmer Rouge and its ideology, backstories about life after Pol Pot, the Killing Fields. This is my second time booking my trip to Cambodia through TripAdvisor and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to travel with no hassles and independent time between daily itineraries.
