Highlights
  • Royal Palace - The Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda are among the most remarkable structures in the capital, showcasing some of the finest examples of Khmer architecture. Initially built by the French in 1866, the Royal Palace is the residence of the current King Sihamoni. The adjacent Silver Pagoda is unique in its own right, with a floor made up of 5,329 solid silver tiles, giving the building its name. Inside, you’ll find numerous gold and jeweled Buddha statues, including the highly valued 17th-century baccarat crystal Buddha. Other significant buildings within the compound include Wat Preah Keo Morokat, where Royal ceremonies are held, and stupas like King Ang Doung Stupa, the burial site of former King Norodom. (Open from 8:00am to 10:30am and 2:00pm to 5:00pm. Women should cover their shoulders, and both men and women should cover their knees).

  • National Museum - The museum boasts one of the world’s largest collections of Khmer art, featuring sculptures, Khmer ceramics, bronzes, and ethnographic items. With over 14,000 pieces, the collection spans from prehistoric times to periods before, during, and after the Khmer Empire, which at its peak extended from Thailand across present-day Cambodia to southern Vietnam. The National Museum of Cambodia is located next to the Royal University of Fine Arts on the west side of the museum. The museum buildings, inspired by Khmer temple architecture, were constructed between 1917 and 1924, officially inaugurated in 1920, and renovated in 1968.

Additional Information

Welcome to Phnom Penh! The capital city of Cambodia lies at the confluence of the Mekong, Tonle Sap and Bassac rivers. Phnom Penh was regarded by many as the most beautiful of all the French-built cities in Indochina and so was formerly called the pearl of Indochina. It was a bustling commercial center during the French occupation, but the years of war crushed it to a field of ruins before becoming a ghost-city during the Khmer Rouges period. It’s only since the 90’s that the city really began to recover and today it has reestablished itself as the political and financial center of the country. Its rich historical past can be traced to some Khmer and French influence evidences such as many ornate Khmer–style temples and some grand colonial buildings.

Wonderful half-day private city tour. - Wonderful morning tour. My guide, Syphat was very nice and considerate with my needs. As the Palace is still closed, Genocide museum was the initial alternative...which I was reluctant to go. I told that Syphat and he immediately came up another plan, which worked out perfect for me. He was punctual every step of the way. He even went extra effort to help me get SIM card in the middle of tour...and still managed to drop me off at the hotel on the dot at the end of the tour!
