After enjoying breakfast in Phnom Penh, the journey heads northeast for approximately 1.5 hours. An optional stop can be made in Skuon, affectionately known as Spiderville Cambodia. This popular destination for both Cambodian and international travelers offers the unique opportunity to sample local delicacies such as fried tarantulas and other insects. A brief stop allows for exploration of the market in Spider Town, where visitors can also try various seasonal fruits from the region and the Mekong River islands. For those not interested in tasting spiders, crickets, scorpions, grasshoppers, or other insects, this location is also ideal for photography. The journey then continues towards Sambor Prei Kuk.
Upon arrival, a local guide will be ready to introduce the impressive cluster of pre-Angkorian temples at Sambor Prei Kuk. This site features around two hundred brick temples scattered throughout the forest, including some of the oldest in the country. Sambor Prei Kuk served as the second capital of the Khmer Empire, constructed in the 7th century by King Isanvarman I, who united the territories of Chenla Kork and the Khmer water territory of Chenla Toek. The site remained the capital of the Khmer Empire for many centuries. Visitors will explore major temples such as Prasat Tao, known for its intricately adorned lions, and Prasat Sambor, with its ancient shrines.
On the way to Siem Reap, there is an optional stop at Kampong Kdei to view one of Angkor’s ancient bridges, built to span rivers. The Spean Praptos or Kampong Kdei bridge, with over 20 arches, is a remarkable sight, highlighting the Khmer’s engineering prowess akin to the Romans of Southeast Asia. The journey continues to Siem Reap, arriving in the town after approximately 1 hour.
