- Historic City of Ayutthaya - The Historic City of Ayutthaya is home to Wat Phra Si Sanphet, the largest temple ruin in Ayutthaya, recognized as a UNESCO Heritage site. This temple is a must-see for all visitors to Ayutthaya, as it served as the personal temple of Thai kings during the Ayutthaya period. The temple’s highlight is the three large stupas at its center, built to house the relics of all Ayutthaya kings. It holds great value for those interested in studying Thai history. Wat Phra Si Sanphet was located within the Grand Palace of Ayutthaya and functioned as the royal chapel, similar to Wat Phra Kaeo in Bangkok. During Ayutthaya’s peak, it was the largest temple in the city. When King Borom Trai Lokanat ordered the construction of new living quarters, the residential palace was converted into a temple, leading to the establishment of Wat Phra Si Sanphet.
- Vihara Phra Mongkhon Bophit - Viharn Pra Mongkolborpit is home to one of Thailand’s largest bronze Buddha images. Many Thai Buddhists visit this temple to admire the beauty of the enormous golden Buddha image, which is in the posture of subduing Mara. The Buddha image measures 9.55 meters across the lap and stands 12.45 meters tall. Visitors must look up to the ceiling to fully appreciate the immense size of this Buddha image.
- Wat Mahathat - Wat Mahathat is a UNESCO world heritage site, renowned among global travelers for the Lord Buddha’s head embedded in a Bodhi tree. Historically, Wat Mahathat was a royal temple of the Ayutthaya Kingdom. It is one of the oldest and most significant temples in Ayutthaya’s history, as it housed the Buddha’s holy relic. Attractions at Wat Mahathat include remnants of old structures such as pagodas, octagonal pagodas, a royal hall, small temples, murals under a Bodhi tree, and the famous sandstone Ayutthaya-style Buddha head in a tree’s root.
- Wat Phra Ngam - Wat Phra Ngam is another essential old temple to visit in Ayutthaya. The beauty of this sacred site is evident in the stunning architecture of the structured octagon pagoda and the “Time Portal,” an arched entrance made from bricks embraced by a giant Bodhi Tree. The exotic appearance of this notable arch has become a popular photo spot for trendy foreign tourists.
- Wat Na Phra Men - Wat Na Phra Meru is the only temple in Ayutthaya that was not destroyed by the Burmese, showcasing the most complete vision of Ayutthaya architecture. Here, visitors can see the original beauty of the 500-year-old Ayutthaya temple. Additionally, the temple houses a green stone Buddha image dating back to the Dvaravati period. This stone Buddha statue is in a sitting position, one of only five that exist in Thailand. After visiting this temple, guests can enjoy an authentic Thai dinner recommended by our guide.
-
Wat Chaiwatthanaram - Wat Chaiwattanaram is one of Ayutthaya’s most visited historical sites. The temple was commissioned in 1630 by King Prasat Thong to honor his mother, featuring an architectural style influenced by the Angkor temple in Cambodia. Its unique feature is a large, central prang (Khmer-style pagoda) surrounded by smaller prangs, symbolizing Mount Sumeru, the gods’ mountain according to Hindu belief. The temple’s lighting at night enhances its exotic and beautiful appearance.
As a bonus to the tour, guides will take guests on a sunset boat ride, offering a romantic view of the sunset on the Chao Phraya riverbank, before returning to a comfortable hotel.
