Additional Information

The Palmenti di Pietranico tour is a specially curated itinerary designed for visitors to explore historical vats spread across the landscape. These gigantic boulders, skillfully transformed into tanks in the past, were utilized for wine production directly in the vineyards. Consequently, the farmers returned home carrying only the grape juice, discarding the by-products in the fields themselves, thus eliminating the necessity for transporting non-wine producing elements to the farms and simultaneously enriching the land. The presence of these carved-out millstones serves as an incredibly insightful testament to the high degree of craftsmanship of local artisans and the grand scale that the production of high-quality wines had attained in the region. The highest density of millstones hewn out of the rock in Abruzzo can be found in the Municipality of Pietranico, situated on the western-leaning slope under the town’s control.
