After about 1.5 hours of a comfortable drive, you’ll arrive in Pilsen, the beer-brewing capital of the world since the 19th century and the European Capital of Culture in 2015. Beer enthusiasts shouldn’t miss the chance to join a group tour of the Pilsner Urquell brewery (admission included), where the pilsner type of beer originated. Here, you can taste the locally dubbed “liquid bread” straight from oak barrels (morning pick-up times at 8:30 am and 9 am apply only from July to September due to the brewery tour schedule). Afterward, enjoy a traditional Bohemian lunch at the oldest local beerhouse.

You’ll see the world’s 5th largest synagogue (interiors closed since early 2020 for reconstruction; alternatively, you can visit the Old Synagogue with a memorial for victims—closed on Saturdays and Jewish holidays, admission not included), the local university, the 16th-century Renaissance city hall, and the Cathedral of St. Bartholomew with the highest church tower in Czechia (102 m). If interested, there’s an option to explore the labyrinth of passages, cellars, and wells built under the city in the 14th century. The total length of these passages exceeds seventeen kilometers, making it one of the largest historical underground systems in Central Europe (optional, not included).
