• Rundale Palace Museum (Rundales Pils) - Explore the Rundale Palace museum and its gardens.

In 1735, the Duke of Courland, Ernst Johann von Biron, acquired a parcel of land in Rundāle, which included an antiquated medieval fortress intended to be replaced by a new summer retreat. The original fortress was torn down, and in 1736, construction commenced on a new structure designed by Bartolomeo Rastrelli. The building process, overseen by Rastrelli, concluded in 1768. During this period, Johann Michael Graff crafted exquisite stucco work for the interior of the palace. Ernst Johann von Biron held a particular fondness for the palace, taking up residence there in 1768 and frequently staying over the summers until his passing in 1772.

Throughout World War I, the German forces occupied the palace, repurposing it as a hospital and headquarters. In the course of the 1812 French invasion of Russia, Napoleon’s troops also used it as a medical facility. By the late 19th century, efforts were made to refurbish and modernize the palace and its surrounding park.
