Exploring Ancient Ruins and Serene Lagoons: A Day in Pojan
When the opportunity arose to explore the ancient ruins of Apollonia and the serene beauty of Karavasta Lagoon, I couldn’t resist. Join me as I recount a day filled with history, nature, and breathtaking views.
A Stroll Through Time: Apollonia’s Ancient Wonders
As someone who spends most of his days riding the waves and soaking up the sun, the idea of stepping back in time to explore ancient ruins was a thrilling change of pace. The Apollonia Archaeological Park, with its rich tapestry of Greek and Roman history, was a sight to behold. Walking through the remnants of this once-mighty city, I could almost hear the whispers of philosophers and the clinking of wine glasses from centuries past. The ruins, dedicated to the god Apollo, were a testament to the city’s historical significance, and I found myself lost in the stories etched into the stones.
Our guide, Aneo, was a fountain of knowledge, weaving tales of emperors and scholars with an enthusiasm that was infectious. His passion for the history of Apollonia brought the ancient city to life, making it easy to imagine the bustling streets and vibrant culture that once thrived here. As we wandered through the ruins, I couldn’t help but draw parallels to the timeless beauty of the ocean, both holding secrets of the past waiting to be discovered.
Serenity at Karavasta Lagoon
After our historical journey, we made our way to the serene Karavasta Lagoon. The transition from the ancient world to the untouched beauty of nature was seamless, and I felt a familiar sense of peace wash over me as we boarded a small boat to explore the lagoon. The gentle lapping of the water against the boat reminded me of the calm before a perfect wave, and I was instantly at ease.
The lagoon is a haven for birdwatchers, and we were lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the famous Dalmatian Pelicans, affectionately known as Curly Pelicans by the locals. Their graceful flight and playful antics were a joy to watch, and I couldn’t help but smile at their carefree nature. As we glided through the water, surrounded by the lush greenery of the national park, I was reminded of the untouched beauty of the Caribbean islands I call home.
Views from the Top: A Towering Perspective
Our adventure concluded with a climb to the top of an old watchtower, offering panoramic views that took my breath away. Standing 36 meters above the ground, I felt a sense of exhilaration akin to catching a perfect wave. The view stretched out before us, revealing snow-capped mountains in the distance and the vast expanse of the lagoon below.
The tower was a photographer’s dream, and I found myself snapping away, trying to capture the essence of this incredible place. On clear days, they say you can see all the way to Bari, Italy, and while I wasn’t that lucky, the view was nothing short of spectacular. As I stood there, taking it all in, I felt a deep appreciation for the natural beauty and rich history that Albania has to offer.
This incredible tour was a highlight of my travels, a perfect blend of history, nature, and adventure. Whether you’re a history buff, a nature lover, or just someone looking for a unique experience, I can’t recommend it enough. Until next time, keep riding the waves of life and exploring the wonders of the world!
