Ponce, often referred to as ‘the pearl of the south’ or the ‘city of quenepas,’ holds the position as the second largest populous city in Puerto Rico. It’s settled along the southern coastline and bears the name of Juan Ponce de Leon y Loayza, the direct descendant of the prominent Spanish figure, Juan Ponce de Leon. While the city’s vibrant and lovely European-style architecture harks back to Old San Juan, the inhabitants will often assertively state, ‘ponce is ponce and everything else is simply parking.’
