Additional Information

Experience nature at its finest by joining us for turtle-watching on the East coast of Trinidad, in the quaint village of Matura. Our journey takes us through a small forested area, and road conditions may vary with the weather, so alternative turtle-watching sites might be used to observe the majestic leatherback turtles. Your participation supports the local youth striving to improve their lives. This is truly a pure nature tour! The endangered leatherback turtles come ashore from March 15th to September 15th each year for their nesting season. These giants visit the shores up to 3 or 4 times during the season to lay between 480 and 1,000 eggs. Remarkably, they can grow up to seven feet in length and weigh over 2,000 pounds. These incredible creatures travel thousands of miles to lay their eggs here. Turtle watching is available from March 15th to August 31st, 2024.

Extraordinary - Nick was great company, very responsive and hugely knowledgeable. He’s been in TT tourism for over 20 years - lots of great stories and information! Our tour took us to Las Cuevas as the conditions were favourable and the journey much shorter (around 1hr each way from Port of Spain). We arrived and met our guide, Arlene. For the next three hours we were up close with enormous leatherback turtles digging their nests, laying eggs and covering their tracks. It felt like it passed in a moment - extraordinary. Would highly recommend!

Amazing experience, but contact tour guide organization directly. - We booked this tour but we were taken to Las Cuevas beach instead of Matura. The experience itself was amazing and highly recommended, but this tour is basically an expensive taxi ride. We paid a total of 380 USD for the tour and almost all of this went to the driver. To organize the same from our hotel in Port of Spain would be about half that cost. It turned out that the tour guides were working on a voluntary basis and did not get paid. Only a symbolic fee was paid to the guides for the coverage of expenses with running the tours. You are better of with contacting this organization directly and organize transport from your hotel for a better experience. Las Cuevas Eco Friendly Association Tours
