Highlights
  • Shipyard Brewing Company - Founded in 1994, Shipyard is one the largest breweries in the State of Maine. The legendary partnership of Fred Forsley and Alan Pugsley of Shipyard Brewing, is not one to look past. Starting in Kennebunk as Federal Jack’s Brew Pub, Shipyard made their way to Portland in 1994 after they grew out of their space only a year later. Even now, with new breweries opening up all over Portland, they continue to be a huge player in Portland’s craft beer industry today.

  • Liquid Riot - This is the house that Novare Res Bier Cafe built, as that renowned Portland beer bar provided the impetus for its owners to open Liquid Riot nearby. Formerly known as In’finiti Fermentation and Distillation, this is one of the country’s few combinations of restaurant, brewery, and distillery in one place. The space is striking, with floor-to-ceiling glass separating the three sections so customers can ogle the producers at work. The beer is varied, and the spirits range from clear to brown, with many in barrels for the long haul.

  • Portland Beer Hub - Home to Maine Brews Cruise and the epicenter for all things beer in Portland, Maine!

Additional Information

The Portland Pubs Walking Tour is a leisurely 3-stop, 1 mile stroll through Portland’s Old Port neighborhood. This journey through history, narrated by the beverages inspired by Maine’s tenacious spirit, takes you past prominent landmarks and to our working waterfront.

Along the way, you’ll visit producers like Liquid Riot, a brewery and distillery that pays homage to the infamous Portland Rum Riots of 1855, and Shipyard Brewing Company, a cornerstone of Maine’s craft beer culture for over a quarter-century.

This bus tour’s final tasting will be held at Portland Beer Hub, the home of Maine Brews Cruise. Portland Beer Hub is a combo beer bar and retail space in the heart of the Old Port. The selection here includes beers from over 30 breweries across the state of Maine. As a bonus, all guests snag a 10% discount on additional draft and to-go purchases!

Walking, Talking, Learning & Drinking - This was our second walking tour and would definitely go again. Our guide, Tom, is a wonderful storyteller and a treasure trove of knowledge and fun facts about Portland; the city, its buildings, its history, and, of course, its craft breweries. The other guests were a delightful mix of personalities and had stories of their own to share. All in all, Maine Brews Cruise provides an interesting and fun afternoon.

Beer tasting tour - Even though the rain put a damper on the walk, the tour was a blast! The breweries we visited were great(nice beer selections )and our guide Peter was informative and entertaining! The time went by really fast. It was the best way to spend a rainy afternoon!

Brewery walking tour - Our guide Peter was so knowledgable and friendly! It was great to learn the specifics of the history of local breweries as well as some Portland history. It was also nice to be able to try different varieties that we weren't familiar with. Was a great activity for a group of friends but would also be good in a business setting if applicable.

Terrific way to spend an afternoon! - Fun walk around Portland, with stops at 3 breweries along the way. Got a larger "taste" at each of the breweries than I've had on other tours. Knowledgeable and friendly guide.

Poorly planned tour - Although the guide was friendly, he provided very little information about the breweries or Portland history. It seemed like something we could have done on our own at a fraction of the cost. Of the 3 planned stops, only one of them seemed prepared and we were able to taste a flight of beers. One of the pubs had just done their “last call” and couldn’t seat us. Then we were taken to a place that was closed. There was a lot of wasted time wandering around in the rain.
