Additional Information

Board the Elizabeth Grace for this exclusive one-of-a-kind experience. Whether you are a local or visiting from away, the stone fortresses built in the early 19th century in Portland Harbor are always captivating. They are imposing reminders of days not too far gone when the defense of our coastline required their presence.

Despite their prominence, the forts are not easy to access for a variety of reasons, and most locals and visitors have never been to Fort Scammel, the only fort in the Harbor to see active combat. Fortunately, the owners of Fort Scammel have partnered with us to offer private tours of this incredible historic site. This is an experience NOT TO BE MISSED! Along the way, we’ll cruise past some of the other great sights in the bay, including the iconic lighthouses.

Fun little quick tour, friendly and authentic staff and beautiful nature in Casco Bay. - Great tour and fun. The boat crew and office meeting place staff are extremely friendly and welcoming and seem to sincerely appreciate your tourist visit and patronage. They have real love and pride for Portland and Maine which adds to the fun, friendliness and authenticity of the tour. You get a free beer or other alcoholic or non alcoholic beverage on the cruise. One small oversight (probably Trip Advisors fault, not the tour operator) is that on the Trip Advisor write-up, it says the boat cruise goes to Fort Gorges Isalnd in Casco Bay but it actually goes to House Island where the remnants of Fort Scammel are. The weather was a bit grey and rainy so I assume the operators change things up but perhaps the write up should be corrected. On island tour guide was a real pleasure, I believe he worked for the Portland Camping company. He was a great guide and narrator and very knowledgeable and eager to talk about the local history and lore. Being a history and war history buff myself I enjoyed talking to him. He was also very friendly and down to earth as are most Mainers, and as are the entire staff operating this tour. You can also do on island yurt pretty comfy camping with the on island company. I'd consider coming back for a camping trip and we are not really campers. All told, this is a fun little 2 hour cruise and tour (small group and private tour) and you can't go wrong for what you get. This tour is highly recommended.

The narrative is... - The narrative is involved. I liked it but I think kids would be bored until they get underground. Be prepared to do some walking.
