Highlights
  • Portland Head Light - Maine’s oldest lighthouse, commissioned by George Washington. Known as the most photographed lighthouse in the state.
  • Liberty Ship Memorial - A tribute to the WWII naval shipyard. At its peak, it employed up to 30,000 workers who built 30 “Ocean” cargo ships for the British government starting in 1941, and 236 “Liberty” cargo ships for the U.S. shortly after.
  • Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse - A caisson-style lighthouse constructed in 1897, marking the west side of the entrance to Casco Bay’s main shipping channel. Nearby are Fort Preble and Southern Maine Community College.
  • Fort Gorges - Modeled after Fort Sumner, this former military fort was built on Hog Island Ledge in Casco Bay between 1858 and 1864. It saw no battles and housed no troops.
  • Portland Breakwater Lighthouse - Erected in 1875 and also known as Bug Light due to its small size. Inspired by a Greek monument but made of cast iron, it is located in Bug Light Park, a popular spot for summer picnics and kite flying.
