The Columbia Gorge NSA, extending 85 miles (137 kilometers), could have been a national park if not for its vital role as a transport corridor. It’s home to waterfalls, mountains, monoliths, resort towns, vineyards, orchards, and terraces—and of course, The River, which hosts various birds, fish, and unique plant and invertebrate species. Back in the early 1900s, folks from Portland would travel in their Model T cars along the Columbia River Highway, America’s first scenic highway, to take in the beauty of the waterfalls. Rumor has it there are over 4000 waterfalls, with many tucked away, but also many that are easily reachable from the Historic Highway.
