Additional Information

When vacationers inquire about the one must-see attraction in Portland, our recommendation is the 5-mile (8-9 km) trail in Forest Park. Regardless of the season, this nature hike feels like stepping into an alternate universe located at the edge of and interwoven with the city fabric.

We host two daily departures, covering varied landscapes with an elevation increase of roughly 900 ft. Our morning hike is distinctly designed to offer a Northwest Portland experience, culminating at the International Rose Test Garden - this venture, labelled the Forest Park Experience, runs from 9 a.m to midday. An afternoon slot is available but on a limited basis at 1:30 p.m. On rare occasions, we organize a later hike that kicks off from Goose Hollow, winds through local neighborhoods and ascends into the park - this excursion, named Goose Hollow to the Forest, is from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. Both trips cover famous landmarks like the Japanese Garden, Pittock Mansion, and Witch’s Castle, but each provides a unique perspective on the forest.

Once in Forest Park, within no time of leaving the city streets behind, you may find it hard to believe you’re still within city limits.

Location
2772 NW Thurman St
Northwest Thurman Street
For the 9 a.m. and 1:30 departures, we meet outside Haven Coffee, on NW Thurman, a few blocks from the #15 bus stop (NW Vaughn and 27th). Have Coffee has newly opened in the spot so you may not find it on Google. The 2:30 p.m. hike meets at a different point

Nice tour of the forest in the city! - We learned a lot about the plants and history of Portland. We were impressed that the tour was not cancelled since our party of 3 was the only group. Sarah spent a lot of time with us and was very knowledgeable about the area. I suggest wearing hiking shoes and dressing for a slightly challenging walk. There is a good uphill climb involved, so if you are not fit you could have a bit of a time handling it.

Forest Park Hike - Edwin made us feel welcome, was very knowledgeable, accommodating and had a great sense of humor. He braved the elements and gave us a great tour, and we would request him again if given the opportunity.

Love nature, but limited on time, and want to get the most out of Portland - I an avid lover of nature and hiker. I chose to do this trip on my one leisure day in Portland and was not disappointed. It was a beautiful easy to moderate hike pending your level of fitness that wound you through a very manageable 1000 foot elevation change leaving you with beautiful views of Portland from above. It was gorgeous temperate rainforest the whole way that you would be hard pressed to find in another city center. We finished in the rose garden which allowed me to easily continue my adventure into the beautiful Japanese gardens. My guide, Edwin, was fantastic. He is a very elective, interesting man, that has a vast knowledge of Portlands history from a million years ago to today depending how far you want to delve. You would be lucky to be paired with him. Highly recommend this trip.

Lovely scenic walk - Great tour with Sara, lovely scenery along the hike and interesting history and tales along the way. Gorgeous views from Pittock Mansion too. It's a relatively uphill walk though so worth keeping in mind depending on your fitness levels (I was definitely a bit tired by the time we reached the top :) )

Active, engaging, and fantastic! - The tour was awesome and my tour guide Rowan is exceptional. I signed up for this solo at 9am on a Saturday and it was just me, one other guest, and Rowan. The location was incorrect in the details listed in TripAdvisor but Rowan gave me a call at 9am and it wasn’t hard to find him across the street corner. Once we got past that hiccup, we were off! Rowan is super welcoming, kind, knowledgeable and engaging, and went at our pace. After hiking the park, we got to the mansion at 11am and finished the tour at the Rose Garden around 12:30. I learned a lot about the area and Rowan was great about pointing out details along the way and giving the back story. We saw a lot of wonderful wildlife, vegetation, breathtaking views, and had fun. I highly recommend booking this tour if you want to go for a 3-4 hr hiking adventure with someone who knows the area and can share some rich knowledge with you. Bring water and perhaps a couple snacks. I brought 2 Luna bars and a water bottle, along with a zip up hoodie, cap, sunscreen, and sunglasses (in a lightweight backpack), and was good to go. I also had a power bank on me which was useful because of all the pictures I was taking (my iPhone was at 25% at the end of the tour). At the end of the 9am tour, you can also go into the Japanese Garden for $22, which I did as well (not included in the tour - it’s separate). Recommend that too if you are up for it since it’s right there. There’s also a designated Uber and Lyft area there between the Rose Garden and Japanese Garden so you can go wherever you like when you’re finished. I clocked over 17,000 steps by the time I got back to my hotel around 3:15pm. So rewarding and fun!! Happy trails!

A great way to spend a vacation Sunday morning! - Our guide was quite informative and the sights quite captivating. Being from "dry country," the wetness of ground and air was not as comfortable as hoped, but a good time was had. Two old folk (70+) did not hold up things too badly, and we all got to the end in reasonably good shape. We would recommend this hike to anyone who is in reasonable physical shape and wants to enjoy a forest environment in the midst of a metropolitan area!
