The construction of the building that exists today dates back to the end of the 18th century, when the Brotherhood of the Souls and Wounds of St Francis moved from the Monastery of Santa Clara to the Chapel of St Catherine.

Despite being housed in a building of great historical and architectural value, it is a modern and well-equipped hospital in the country, and a benchmark for quality in healthcare provision.

• Passeio das Virtudes - The Passeio das Virtudes garden is the perfect place to end the day with a fabulous sunset over the River Douro. Lying on the grass or enjoying a beer on the terrace is the ideal spot for those who like to relax at the end of the day. • Castle of the Cheese - In a dominant position over the Atlantic Ocean and a short distance from the mouth of the Douro River, it is also known as Castelo do Queijo (Cheese Castle) because, according to tradition, it was built on a rounded granite rock similar in shape to a cheese (penedo do Queijo).

• Miradouro da Vitoria - The Miradouro da Vitória is located right in the heart of the old Jewish quarter. The history of this Jewish neighbourhood tells us that in the 14th century, King João I demarcated an area where all the Jews had to live, with high walls and access gates - it was like a city within the city of Porto. This period lasted around 100 years, until the arrival of the Inquisition.
